AI and Nuclear Missiles

Last year, I read Yuval Harari’s book, “Nexus: A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI.”

True to his background as a historian, Harari traces developments such as the Industrial Revolution and the evolution of religious views on life and death, while exploring where AI might be leading humanity.

It was a stimulating intellectual adventure.

One thought experiment regarding AI mentioned in the book left a particularly strong impression on me.

It involves an AI given the directive to "maximize paperclip production";

when the AI executes the optimal strategy to fulfill this command, it destroys anything that hinders production—including wiping out humanity—and proceeds to fill not just the Earth, but the entire galaxy, with paperclips.

This scenario is presented as an example of how AI could potentially do something outrageous that humans would never even imagine.

Recently, incidents of AI-driven hacking have been reported around the world.

Then I recall one of my tanka poems:

Collect warheads of

Nuclear missiles on the earth

Send them to Jupiter

'Cause peach trees will be blooming

Next spring on the brown planet

核弾頭を集めて送ろう木星に

春には桃の花が咲くから

Kaku dantou wo Atsumete okurou Mokusei ni

Haru niwa momo no Hana ga saku kara

Don't you think it should be done before we are outrageously terminated by an AI given an absurd directive?
